One person was killed and two others were injured on Monday, September 14, 2026, when a driver attempting a midblock U-turn collided with an oncoming car on Torrey Pines Road near Prospect Place in La Jolla. The crash happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Torrey Pines Road, when a Land Rover heading northbound turned into the path of a southbound Mitsubishi Mirage. The passenger riding in the Mitsubishi died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts. Torrey Pines Road was shut down from Prospect Place east through Princess Street for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage, backing up traffic in the area.
According to La Jolla Light (lajolla.ca), the 56-year-old man driving the Land Rover was attempting the U-turn when he allegedly turned into the path of the 68-year-old woman driving the Mitsubishi, whose vehicle struck the front right side of his car. The Mitsubishi driver suffered multiple serious injuries, including two broken arms, two femur fractures, a fractured pelvis and facial fractures, and was hospitalized along with the Land Rover driver, who complained of pain, The Union Star reported. Authorities said alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash. The victim’s name has not been released, and the investigation into the cause of the collision remains active.
