A woman in her 70s was severely injured when a driver struck her and kept going as she crossed Chatsworth Street near Louise Avenue in the Granada Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department says the collision happened at about 8:20 p.m. on August 30, 2026, as the woman crossed mid-block from the south side of Chatsworth Street toward the north side with another pedestrian. Investigators believe she was hit by a gray Honda Accord traveling eastbound on Chatsworth Street. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took her to a hospital, where police described her injuries as severe. The driver allegedly did not stop, render aid or remain at the scene, and had not been identified as of the latest reports.

According to KTLA, the LAPD released video of the crash on September 4, 2026, asking the public for help identifying the driver. The station reported that the department’s Valley Traffic Division is handling the investigation and that Officer Reyes can be reached at 818-644-8114, with anonymous tips going to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477. Northridge Patch reported that a reward of up to $25,000 is available through the City of Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Reward Program for information leading to the driver’s identification, arrest and conviction, or resolution through a civil compromise. Neither outlet reported any lane or street closures tied to the collision, and police have not released the woman’s name or an updated condition.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 20001 makes it a crime for a driver involved in a collision that injures someone to leave without stopping. The driver must stop immediately at the scene, remain there, and fulfill the duties spelled out in Sections 20003 and 20004, including identifying themselves and rendering reasonable aid. When the crash causes injury, a violation can be charged as a felony. In a civil injury claim, a driver’s flight from the scene is often treated as evidence bearing on the driver’s conduct.

California Vehicle Code 21954 addresses pedestrians who cross outside a marked crosswalk or an unmarked intersection crossing, requiring them to yield the right-of-way to vehicles that are close enough to be an immediate hazard. Importantly, subdivision (b) states that this rule does not relieve a driver of the duty to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian on the roadway. Under California’s comparative fault rules, an injured pedestrian’s own share of responsibility reduces a recovery rather than barring it outright.
