A man was struck and killed on the eastbound 91 Freeway in Corona late Friday night after he exited a disabled pickup truck and ran into a live traffic lane, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP’s Riverside Area station received a report around 10:28 p.m. of a stalled Dodge Ram 1500 blocking the No. 2 FasTrak lane just east of the 15 Freeway. Investigators say the truck’s driver got out and ran into the No. 1 main lane, where he was struck by a Honda HR-V and then run over by a Honda Civic. The man, identified only as an adult male, died at the scene. CHP temporarily closed all eastbound lanes while officers investigated.
According to KTLA, CHP said the drivers of both the Honda HR-V and the Honda Civic remained at the scene, and investigators did not suspect intoxication on the part of either driver. The victim’s sobriety had not been determined as of Saturday, KTLA reported, citing the Riverside County coroner’s office. MyNewsLA additionally reported that the closure disrupted eastbound 91 Freeway traffic for several hours while CHP worked the scene. No further details about the crash, including the identity of the man who died, had been released as investigators continued piecing together why he left his vehicle.
