A 38-year-old Colton woman, Asandria Jacobo, died after she was struck by a Volvo SUV while riding an electric bicycle at the intersection of 12th Street and East F Street, near Fleming Park, on Friday, September 4, 2026. Colton police said the crash was reported around 6:50 p.m., and Jacobo was rushed to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. The exact circumstances of the crash, including who had the right of way, are still unclear.

According to ABC7 Los Angeles (KABC), the Colton Police Department confirmed Jacobo was riding an e-bike when the SUV struck her, and said additional details about the deadly crash were not yet available. Hoodline reported that Colton Police Cpl. E. Wickman is leading the investigation and is asking anyone with information to call (909) 370-5000. Investigators have not said whether speed, distraction, or a right-of-way violation played a role, and no citations or charges have been announced. Colton has ranked among the state’s worst cities for traffic casualties in recent years, according to Hoodline.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 21200 gives a person riding an electric bicycle on a public roadway the same rights and the same duties as the driver of a motor vehicle, including the right to use travel lanes and the protection of traffic laws at intersections. When a driver fails to yield or otherwise violates the rules of the road and strikes a cyclist, that driver can be held civilly liable for the resulting injuries or death, regardless of whether Colton police issue a citation. Investigators in this case have not yet said who had the right of way at 12th Street and East F Street.

Under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60, the surviving family of someone killed in a crash like this one, such as a spouse, children, or other eligible heirs, may file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver. Such a claim can seek compensation for lost financial support, funeral and burial costs, and the loss of the victim’s care and companionship. California law generally gives surviving family members two years from the date of death to file suit.
