A 56-year-old woman died early Saturday, September 5, 2026, after her vehicle collided with an agricultural tractor near Sand Creek Road and Shady Willow Lane in Brentwood, California. The crash happened around 6:15 a.m. and the woman was the sole occupant of her vehicle. Brentwood police officers and paramedics responded and provided medical aid at the scene, but she died from her injuries. The cause of the collision remained under investigation as of Saturday morning.

According to KTVU FOX 2, the Brentwood Police Department said officers and paramedics treated the woman at the scene before she was pronounced dead, and that she was the only person in her vehicle. NBC Bay Area reported that authorities had not released her identity while next of kin were notified, and that investigators had not yet said whether drugs, alcohol, or visibility conditions contributed to the crash. It also remains unclear whether the tractor was displaying the slow-moving-vehicle emblem California law requires for farm equipment traveling 25 mph or slower. Brentwood police are asking anyone with information about the collision to contact investigators.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 24615 requires any vehicle normally operated at 25 mph or less, including agricultural tractors and other farm equipment, to display a triangular slow-moving-vehicle emblem on the rear when driven on a public roadway. The emblem is meant to warn approaching drivers, especially in low-light conditions like early morning, that they are approaching much slower traffic. Investigators in this case have not yet said whether the tractor involved was equipped with the required emblem or adequate lighting.

Under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60, the surviving spouse, children, or other eligible heirs of someone killed in a crash like this one may bring a wrongful death claim against any party found responsible, whether that is the tractor operator, the equipment owner, or another driver. A wrongful death claim can seek compensation for the financial support, care, and companionship the family has lost. Surviving family members generally have two years from the date of death to file such a claim.
