A chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles on eastbound Interstate 10 near State Route 78 in Blythe left one person dead and three others hospitalized on the afternoon of Monday, September 7, 2026. California Highway Patrol officials say traffic had stopped in a construction zone around 4:22 p.m. when a Chevrolet Spark rear-ended a Subaru Outback, pushing it into a Ford Bronco that then struck an Acura MDX. The Subaru’s driver, 62-year-old Allen Glazer of Buckeye, Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other occupants, including a passenger from the Subaru and the driver of the Spark, were airlifted to hospitals in California and Arizona. Eastbound I-10 was shut down at SR-78 for hours while crews cleared the wreckage.

According to MyNewsLA, alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, and CHP officers were still working to determine why traffic had come to a stop in the work zone before the initial impact. The outlet reported that the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified Glazer as the man who died. The names of the other people injured have not been released. The California Highway Patrol’s Blythe office is continuing to investigate the collision, and no citations had been announced as of the latest report.

What the Law Says

California’s Basic Speed Law makes it illegal to drive faster than is safe for current conditions, including approaching stopped or slow-moving traffic in a construction zone. Investigators in chain-reaction crashes like this one often look at whether an approaching driver was traveling too fast to stop safely for traffic already halted ahead. A violation can support a finding of negligence in a civil injury claim even where no criminal citation was issued.

California law also requires drivers to maintain a following distance that allows them to stop safely if the vehicle ahead slows or stops. A rear-end impact that sets off a multi-vehicle chain reaction, as happened here, frequently points to a following-too-close violation by the striking vehicle. This statute is commonly cited in determining fault when one impact pushes vehicles into each other down the line.
