A single-vehicle rollover crash on southbound Highway 101 near Atascadero left one person with major injuries on Wednesday morning. The crash happened around 10:21 a.m. near the Santa Barbara Road offramp, north of State Route 58, when an SUV reportedly struck the center divider and rolled over multiple times before coming to rest upright. Emergency crews closed both southbound lanes of the highway while first responders worked the scene, backing up traffic in the area. The injured occupant was transported to a hospital for treatment. The California Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the vehicle to lose control.
According to KSBY News, the California Highway Patrol’s Templeton office responded to the crash and confirmed only one vehicle was involved. The outlet reported that both southbound lanes were shut down for roughly two hours, with CHP urging drivers to seek an alternate route. Cal Coast News separately reported that the SUV crashed into the center divider about a mile north of Highway 58 before overturning and that responders transported the injured person to the hospital, corroborating the timeline and severity of the injuries. Both outlets reported that the lanes reopened by around 12:40 p.m. No further details about the injured person’s identity or condition have been released.

Major injuries reported in Hwy 101 crash near Atascadero
California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent given the weather, visibility, traffic and road conditions, even when that speed is at or below the posted limit. In single-vehicle rollover cases like this one, investigators often look at whether the driver was traveling too fast for the curve or roadway conditions at the time of the crash. A violation of this statute can support a finding of negligence in a personal injury claim.
Vehicle Code 21658 requires drivers on a roadway with clearly marked lanes to stay within a single lane as nearly as practicable and to move from that lane only when it is safe to do so. A driver who drifts or overcorrects into a center divider, as reportedly happened in this crash, may have violated this lane-control requirement. Losing control of a vehicle in this way can be evidence of driver negligence even without another vehicle involved.
