UPDATE — October 1, 2026

An 18-year-old man died in a single-vehicle rollover crash around 10 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2026, at U.S. Highway 84 and Farm-to-Market Road 1606 in Scurry County, Texas. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s preliminary report, the driver was heading northbound in the passing lane at a high rate of speed when he lost control, left the roadway and rolled over. He was allegedly not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

KSAT reported that the victim was a recent Stevens High School graduate and a 2025-2026 basketball co-captain, citing the school’s boys basketball program. KCBD, which also covered the crash, reported that no other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported. Crashes like this can raise questions about speed, vehicle condition and road design, and families who lose a loved one may have legal options. An 18-year-old from San Antonio died after a single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Highway 84 at FM 1606 in Scurry County, Texas, on Friday night at around 10 p.m. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver was heading north in the passing lane at a high rate of speed when the car left the roadway and overturned. The driver was allegedly not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported.

KTXS reported that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace and that the crash remains under investigation. KTXS and Fox 34 both attribute the crash details to DPS investigators, who said the driver failed to maintain a single lane before leaving the road. Fatal crashes like this one are a reminder that speed and seat belt use can change what happens in a rollover. Families who lose a loved one in a crash may have legal options, and there is no fee unless we win.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code 545.351 requires drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent under the circumstances, considering road conditions and hazards. Driving too fast for conditions can be evidence of negligence when a crash causes injury or death.

Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code 71.002 allows a wrongful death claim when a person dies because of another’s wrongful act or negligence. Certain family members may be able to bring a claim, and deadlines apply, so it is important to speak with a lawyer promptly.

This summary is general information, not legal advice. Every case depends on its specific facts.
