A 31-year-old woman died Wednesday morning after she was struck by a vehicle towing a trailer while riding a Lime e-bike in South Austin. Austin police say the collision happened at about 9:33 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the 1700 block of South Lamar Boulevard. The woman, identified by police as Celeste Garcia, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:38 a.m. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene, was not found to be intoxicated, and is cooperating with investigators. Police have not disclosed what led to the crash, which they say is Austin’s 60th fatal crash of 2026.

CBS Austin (KEYE) reported that the Austin Police Department is investigating the crash through its Vehicular Homicide Unit and has not released the driver’s identity. According to the station, officers have not said what caused the vehicle to collide with the e-bike. Police are asking anyone with information to call the Vehicular Homicide Unit or submit an anonymous tip to Capital Area Crime Stoppers. What the Law Says

Under Texas Transportation Code Section 551.101, a person riding a bicycle — including many e-bikes — on a public roadway has the same rights and is subject to the same duties as the driver of any other vehicle. That means motorists, including those towing a trailer, must yield the right-of-way, keep a safe following and passing distance, and otherwise treat a rider as they would any other vehicle on the road. When a driver fails to see or safely share the road with a rider and that failure causes a collision, the driver can be held civilly liable for the resulting injuries or death.

Because this crash resulted in a fatality, Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Chapter 71 governs any wrongful death claim. Section 71.002 allows the surviving spouse, children, and parents of a person killed by another’s negligent or wrongful act to recover damages, including for loss of companionship, mental anguish, and lost earning capacity. The claim is independent of any criminal investigation and can proceed even while police continue to determine how the crash happened.
