A motorcyclist was airlifted to a Tacoma hospital with serious injuries Tuesday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 12 near Oakville, Washington. The Washington State Patrol says the 25-year-old rider, from Oakesdale, had just turned onto eastbound US 12 from Second Street when she lost control, crossed the center line, and collided with a westbound pickup truck towing a trailer. The truck driver, a 50-year-old Oakville man, was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. The highway was shut down while crews cleared the scene, with drivers detoured onto Second Street.

According to The Olympian, the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was flown to Tacoma General Hospital for treatment. The outlet reports that Washington State Patrol troopers have ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Daily World additionally reported that the collision occurred at milepost 35 on US 12, in Grays Harbor County just west of the Thurston County line.

What the Law Says

Washington law requires drivers to keep to the right half of the roadway except when passing, turning, or avoiding an obstruction. Crossing the center line into oncoming traffic, as allegedly happened in this crash, is one of the most common causes of head-on and near-head-on collisions on two-lane highways like US 12. When a driver strays into the opposing lane and causes a crash, the injured party may have grounds for a personal injury claim.

Washington follows a pure comparative fault rule, meaning an injured person can still recover damages even if they were partially responsible for a crash, though their compensation is reduced by their percentage of fault. This matters in cases like this one, where the investigation into how the motorcyclist entered the highway and lost control is still ongoing. An attorney can help evaluate how fault may be allocated between the parties as the state patrol’s investigation continues.
