One person was injured Friday evening in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 510 and Mullen Road Southeast in Thurston County, Washington. The collision happened at about 5:57 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2026, when a Honda Civic turning from eastbound SR 510 onto Mullen Road Southeast was struck by a westbound Ford Escape. A passenger in the Honda was taken to a hospital in Olympia for treatment. The roadway was blocked for roughly 47 minutes while crews cleared the scene.

According to Nisqually Valley News, the Honda Civic was driven by 22-year-old Amos Volasco of Rainier, who reportedly failed to yield while turning and was struck by a Ford Escape driven by 30-year-old Robert Balz of Yelm. The Washington State Patrol identified the injured passenger as 19-year-old Malakhi A. Tuiloma of Davenport, Iowa, who was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital. Three passengers in the Ford, including a 6-year-old and a 14-year-old, were not injured. Troopers said drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, and Volasco was cited for failure to yield.

What the Law Says

Washington’s traffic code requires a driver turning left within an intersection to yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction that is within the intersection or close enough to be a hazard. Under RCW 46.61.185, a driver who turns across oncoming traffic without yielding can be cited and held liable for resulting injuries. The Washington State Patrol says the Honda Civic driver failed to yield before turning onto Mullen Road Southeast, directly causing this collision.

Washington follows a comparative fault rule under RCW 4.22.005, meaning an injured person can still recover damages even if they share some responsibility for a crash, with compensation reduced in proportion to their own fault. This matters for a passenger who was simply riding in a vehicle at the time of the crash. The statute also allows fault to be apportioned between multiple drivers when more than one party contributed to a collision.
