A pedestrian was struck and killed early Sunday morning on eastbound Interstate 30 near the 1st Avenue exit, close to Fair Park in Dallas. Dallas police and fire-rescue units responded around 3:30 a.m. to reports of a person down in the roadway, where they found a dark-colored SUV and other vehicles stopped on the shoulder. Paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. All eastbound lanes of I-30 were shut down for hours while investigators processed the scene and traffic was diverted off the highway.
According to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperating with police. The outlet reported that Dallas Police Department traffic investigators were still working to determine why the pedestrian was on the freeway and whether any additional vehicles were involved in the collision. The victim’s identity had not been released as of Sunday. Authorities said the roadway was expected to stay closed for several hours as the investigation continued.

Pedestrian fatality shuts down eastbound I-30 in Dallas near Fair Park
Texas Transportation Code Section 545.065 allows the Texas Transportation Commission and local authorities to prohibit pedestrians from using limited-access or controlled-access highways such as I-30 when official traffic-control devices mark the restriction. Freeways are built for high-speed vehicle traffic, and a person on foot in the travel lanes creates an extreme hazard for both the pedestrian and passing drivers. When a pedestrian is allegedly present on a restricted freeway, investigators examine signage, lighting, and each driver’s ability to see and react in time.
Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 33.001 sets out the state’s proportionate responsibility rule, often called the 51% bar rule. Under this statute, an injured person or their family can recover damages only if the injured party is found to be 50% or less responsible for the incident, with any recovery reduced by their share of fault.
