A man died and another was seriously injured early Sunday morning when a red Honda sedan and a white Chevrolet pickup truck collided head-on along La Cresta Road near the community of Crest in San Diego’s East County. The crash was reported around 12:35 a.m. on the narrow, winding two-lane road, with the pickup traveling downhill and the Honda heading uphill when the vehicles struck one another. The Honda driver was trapped inside his car and was pronounced dead at the scene; his identity had not been released as of Sunday. The pickup driver managed to free himself from his heavily damaged truck and was taken to a hospital with major traumatic injuries.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Justin Fuller said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, and that distraction or impairment may also have played a role. The newspaper reported that La Cresta Road is a two-lane route with blind turns and narrow shoulders, and that Sunday’s wreck marked the third fatal crash on this stretch of road in 2026 alone, following deadly collisions in February and May. The California Highway Patrol is investigating and had not released the official cause of the crash or the identities of those involved.

Head-on crash in East County leaves one dead, one injured
California Vehicle Code 21650 requires drivers to keep to the right half of the roadway except when passing, turning left, or where lanes are marked otherwise. On a narrow, two-lane road like La Cresta Road, drifting left of center is what turns a routine drive into a head-on collision. Investigators typically look closely at lane position and any crossing of the center line when determining fault in this kind of crash.
California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent for the existing conditions, regardless of the posted limit. On roads with blind curves and narrow shoulders, a speed that would be legal on a straightaway can still violate this statute. Authorities cited speed as a likely factor in Sunday’s crash, which is exactly the scenario this law is meant to address.
