A motorcyclist was killed late Tuesday night, September 1, 2026, after a Texas Department of Public Safety pursuit ended in a crash with a Hallsville police patrol vehicle in Longview, Texas. The rider, reported to be a 22-year-old Longview man, was allegedly fleeing from law enforcement at high speed before colliding with the patrol car near the U.S. Highway 80 and Loop 281 interchange around 10:52 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash shut down portions of the roadway while officers worked the scene, and the Texas DPS is continuing to investigate exactly how the pursuit unfolded.

According to cbs19.tv, the motorcyclist had allegedly reached speeds near 140 mph on U.S. 80 while fleeing, and the crash occurred after a law enforcement vehicle moved into the roadway ahead of him. KLTV reported that Texas DPS spokesperson Adam Albritton confirmed the motorcycle and a Hallsville Police Department patrol car collided, and that the rider died at the scene. No officer injuries were reported. Authorities said a full crash report was not expected for seven to ten days as the investigation continues.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Chapter 546 allows police officers operating an authorized emergency vehicle to exceed speed limits and disregard certain traffic rules while responding to or engaged in a pursuit. However, Section 546.005 requires that officers still drive with due regard for the safety of all persons and does not protect them from the consequences of reckless disregard for others’ safety. This standard becomes central whenever a patrol vehicle is positioned in the roadway to end a chase, as happened in this Longview crash.

Texas Penal Code Section 38.04 makes it a crime to intentionally flee from a peace officer who is lawfully attempting to arrest or detain a person. When a person evades in a vehicle and the flight results in another person’s death, the offense can be elevated to a second-degree felony. This statute is relevant because, according to reports, the motorcyclist was fleeing from law enforcement when the fatal crash occurred.
