A truck driver was hospitalized after a Temple Police drone allegedly collided with his tractor-trailer on Interstate 35 in Temple, Texas, on the afternoon of June 2, 2026. The crash happened around 2:36 p.m. near the West Nugent Avenue exit. The driver, a Canadian citizen, was taken to a hospital for treatment and says he continues to experience pain from his injuries. More than three months later, the City of Temple still has not released the crash records despite multiple public information requests.

According to the Killeen Daily Herald, Temple’s interim city attorney referred the records request to the Texas Attorney General’s office for a ruling on whether the documents must be disclosed. The newspaper reported that a Temple Police drone, a DJI Matrice 30T, was pulled from service in early June for manufacturer repairs tied to a faulty antenna, a timeline that lines up with the crash. The driver’s attorneys filed a governmental notice of liability claim against the city on July 28, 2026, a required step before pursuing a lawsuit against a Texas municipality. Temple Police has said its drone operators must hold FAA Part 107 certification and complete regular safety training.

What the Law Says

When a crash on a Texas roadway results in injury, the investigating law enforcement agency is required to complete a written crash report. These reports document how a collision occurred and are ordinarily available to the people involved, which is part of why the City of Temple’s refusal to release the report in this case has drawn scrutiny. Access disputes like this one are resolved through Texas’s public information laws rather than left to a city’s discretion alone.

Before suing a Texas city or other governmental unit for an injury, an injured person generally must first file a formal notice of claim describing the incident, which is the step the driver’s attorneys took in July 2026. Texas law also limits when a governmental unit can be held liable for injuries and caps the damages that can be recovered from it. These rules make claims against a police department or municipality more procedurally demanding than a typical injury claim against a private party.
