A woman died early Thursday after she was thrown from her motorcycle in a collision with a tractor-trailer on the Katy Freeway in west Harris County. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened just after midnight on September 3, 2026, in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Mason Road, close to the Grand Parkway interchange in Katy. Deputies said the motorcyclist struck the rear of the 18-wheeler and was ejected from her bike, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt. Authorities have not publicly released the woman’s name.
ABC13 Houston reported that deputies believe the woman was traveling at a high rate of speed in the westbound lanes as she neared the Grand Parkway when she hit the back of the 18-wheeler. According to ABC13 Houston, investigators said she was wearing protective gear but that it “didn’t help,” and she showed no signs of intoxication. The station reported the freeway was shut down for roughly two hours before crews cleared the wreckage ahead of the morning rush. Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office have said they suspect a failure to control speed was the primary cause, and the investigation remains open. No charges had been announced as of publication.

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.351 sets the state’s maximum speed requirement, and it does more than point at the posted sign. A driver may not operate a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and actual hazards then existing, and must control speed as needed to avoid colliding with another vehicle or person on the roadway. Investigators in Harris County frequently cite this section when a rider or driver strikes the rear of a slower or stopped vehicle. A violation can be evidence of negligence in a civil claim, but it does not automatically decide who pays.
Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 33.001 governs proportionate responsibility, the state’s comparative fault rule. A jury assigns each party a percentage of responsibility, and a claimant’s recovery is reduced by their own share; if that share is greater than 50 percent, the claim is barred entirely. The rule applies to wrongful death and survival claims brought by a family, not just to injury claims. That is why an early police theory about speed is not the end of the analysis, and why factors such as the truck’s lighting, lane position and speed are still examined.
