An off-duty San Antonio Police Department officer was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash near U.S. Highway 281 and Loop 1604 on the city’s north side. The officer, working a motorcycle escort for a funeral procession, was struck during the collision and taken to a hospital under a Priority 1 designation, indicating potentially serious injuries. The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. as the procession moved through the area. Details about the second vehicle and what led to the collision had not been released as of Tuesday evening.

According to KSAT, the officer was working the funeral escort as off-duty secondary employment, a common arrangement in which San Antonio police officers are contracted by funeral homes or private escort services to guide processions through traffic. The San Antonio Fire Department confirmed the Priority 1 transport but did not release the officer’s identity or updated condition. The incident remained under investigation, and authorities had not said which driver, if either, was found to be at fault. Local reporting also noted that similar crashes involving funeral-escort officers have occurred in the San Antonio area in recent years.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Section 546.002 defines when a peace officer performing a ‘police escort’ — including guiding a funeral procession — may exercise the special privileges given to emergency vehicles, such as proceeding through a stop sign or red light after safely slowing. Those privileges do not excuse an officer from operating with due regard for the safety of others, and this statute is often central to determining fault when a police-escorted procession collides with another vehicle.

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.151 sets out the right-of-way rules drivers must follow at intersections, requiring operators to stop, yield and grant use of the intersection to traffic that is already present or approaching closely enough to pose a hazard. When a two-vehicle crash like this one occurs near an intersection, investigators typically look to this statute to determine which driver failed to yield. A driver who proceeds without yielding and causes a collision can be held liable for the resulting injuries.
