A head-on crash between a pickup truck and a Tehama County TRAX transit bus on Highway 99W near Gyle Road, outside Corning, California, killed six people on the morning of January 14, 2026. According to the California Highway Patrol, the pickup crossed the double-yellow lines into oncoming traffic and struck the bus, which then caught fire. One bus passenger was flown to Enloe Medical Center with major injuries.

Action News Now reported on October 5, 2026 that the Tehama County Sheriff-Coroner’s Division amended the manner of death for the pickup driver to suicide and for the five people on the bus to homicide after a CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team review. The outlet reports that investigators cited vehicle data showing no effort to slow or stop, writings referring to suicidal thoughts, and dash-camera video from the day before. The sheriff called the findings “deeply troubling.” Families affected by an intentional or negligent crash may have legal options, and these findings are as reported by the outlet.

A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a Tehama County transit (TRAX) bus on Highway 99W south of Gyle Road, near Corning, left six people dead on the morning of January 14, 2026. The California Highway Patrol said at the time that the pickup crossed double-yellow lines into oncoming traffic and the bus caught fire right after impact. One bus passenger was flown to Enloe Medical Center with major injuries.

According to The Spokesman-Review, authorities now say the crash was intentional. KQMS reports that CHP investigators concluded the pickup driver, a Corning woman, crossed the center line into the bus’s path, that vehicle data showed no effort to stop, and that an autopsy found methamphetamine. Authorities reportedly will classify the pickup driver’s death as a suicide and the other five deaths as homicides. Findings are based on reports from the investigating agencies and may be updated.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 23152 prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A driver who operates a vehicle while impaired and causes a crash can face criminal liability and civil claims from those harmed.

California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60 lets certain surviving family members and others bring a wrongful death claim when a person dies because of another’s wrongful act or neglect. Deadlines and eligibility rules apply, so families often seek legal guidance early.
