A fatal October 2024 collision on Highway 74 near Vista Point in the Palm Desert area is now the inspiration for a new California law. Reports indicate a big rig allegedly lost control and struck a pickup truck whose 27-year-old driver, a La Quinta resident, was on his way to work. The driver of the pickup was killed. Highway 74 is a narrow mountain corridor where heavy trucks share the road with commuters.
The Desert Sun reported that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a Caltrans transparency bill inspired by the crash. KESQ and MyNewsLA identify it as Assembly Bill 1145, known as “Tristin’s Bill,” authored by Assemblymembers Jeff Gonzalez and Greg Wallis. According to those reports, the law requires Caltrans to weigh the cost of a requested local traffic-safety measure against other options and to give a written explanation when it rejects one, effective January 1, 2027. A Riverside County study cited in the coverage found collision rates on Highway 74 south of Palm Desert were 125% higher than on comparable highways.
