An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed early Saturday, September 26, 2026, in a crash on westbound Interstate 20 near Bowman Springs Road in Arlington, Texas. Police say the motorcycle rear-ended a Honda Civic at a high rate of speed, throwing the rider from the bike and onto the highway shoulder. The rider, later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as Landon Corbia Murphy, was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The impact also pushed the Civic into nearby construction barriers, and its driver was hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The crash remains under investigation by the Arlington Police Department.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, officers were dispatched to the scene around 1:01 a.m. and found Murphy lying on the shoulder of the highway before he was rushed to a hospital. The outlet reported that investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash, which happened inside an active construction zone along the Southeast Connector project. FOX 4 News, citing the Arlington Police Department, similarly reported that the motorcycle struck the rear of the Civic at a high rate of speed. No further details, including whether the rider was wearing a helmet, have been released as the investigation continues.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.351 requires drivers to operate their vehicle at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for existing conditions, and prohibits driving faster than is safe given traffic, weather and the roadway ahead, including through active construction zones. Investigators say the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of the Civic. If a driver’s excessive speed contributed to this crash, it can serve as evidence of negligence in a civil claim.

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.062 requires a driver following another vehicle to maintain an assured clear distance so that, given the speed of the vehicles and roadway conditions, they can safely stop without colliding with the vehicle ahead. A rear-end collision like this one often raises the question of whether the trailing driver failed to keep a safe following distance. Violating this statute can support a finding of fault in a resulting injury or wrongful death claim.
