UPDATE — October 9, 2026

A crash involving eight vehicles at Victoria Avenue and Doris Avenue in Oxnard on September 25, 2026, at about 4 p.m. left two drivers dead and four other people hospitalized with injuries of varying severity. Oxnard Police traffic detectives said the driver of a pickup truck allegedly ran a red light and collided with two vehicles traveling westbound through the intersection. Both drivers were trapped and pronounced dead at the scene. The Oxnard Police Department continues to investigate.

According to edhat, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office charged the 29-year-old Santa Paula driver with two counts of second-degree murder, along with DUI causing injury and related counts. Prosecutors allege he was intoxicated and traveling over 100 mph. The reported charges also include special allegations of multiple victims, great bodily injury and prior drunk-driving offenses. He pleaded not guilty and, per CBS Los Angeles, remains in custody on $5 million bail with his next court date set for October 15. These are allegations, and the driver is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

At least two people were killed and five others injured Friday afternoon when seven vehicles collided on Victoria Avenue near Doris Avenue in Oxnard, California. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found a large pickup truck overturned with heavy front-end damage, another vehicle pinned beneath it, and wreckage scattered across multiple lanes. Of the seven people found at the crash site, two were pronounced dead, while one survivor was hospitalized in serious condition, two in moderate condition and one with minor injuries; a sixth person was treated at the scene and released. Oxnard police and firefighters shut down all lanes of Victoria Avenue between Gonzales Road and Teal Club Road for hours while crews cleared the wreckage and investigated. Authorities say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

According to ABC7 Los Angeles, no additional details about the victims or what caused the collision were immediately available as investigators continued working the scene into Saturday. The station reported that one mangled vehicle was found wrapped around the overturned pickup truck, underscoring the force of the impact. The New York Post additionally reported that debris, including at least one section showing heavy burn marks, was scattered across the roadway near fallen light poles. Oxnard police are expected to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash or has information as the investigation continues.

What the Law Says

California’s basic speed law prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent given the weather, visibility, traffic and the width and surface of the roadway, regardless of the posted limit. In multi-vehicle pileups like the one in Oxnard, investigators often examine whether one or more drivers were traveling too fast for conditions. A violation of this statute can support a finding of negligence in a civil claim even when no citation for exceeding the numerical speed limit was issued.

This statute requires drivers to maintain a safe following distance, taking into account speed, traffic and roadway conditions. Chain-reaction collisions involving several vehicles, like the seven-car crash on Victoria Avenue, frequently involve one or more drivers who allegedly failed to leave enough space to stop safely. Establishing a following-too-closely violation can be a key factor in determining fault among multiple drivers.
