A man in his 60s was struck and killed by a vehicle early Thursday morning while crossing the street near 23rd Street and Maricopa Avenue in Richmond, California. The crash happened just after 6:15 a.m. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Maricopa Avenue was closed between 23rd and 24th streets for several hours while officers worked the scene.
NBC Bay Area reported that Richmond police said it remains unclear what led to the crash and that the investigation is ongoing. The outlet noted that the pedestrian’s identity had not been officially released by authorities. This marks the second fatal pedestrian collision on the 23rd Street corridor in recent months, following the death of an 81-year-old man struck nearby in August. City traffic data has flagged the corridor as one of Richmond’s high-injury streets.
California Vehicle Code Section 21950 requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. Drivers approaching any crosswalk must exercise due care and reduce speed or take other necessary action to protect pedestrian safety. Richmond police have not said whether the pedestrian was within a crosswalk when he was struck, and the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
California Vehicle Code Section 22350, the state’s basic speed law, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent given traffic, weather, visibility and roadway conditions. Because the collision happened before dawn on a residential corridor, investigators are expected to examine visibility and vehicle speed as potential factors. Richmond’s 23rd Street corridor has previously been identified by the city as a high-injury area.
