A motorcyclist was killed Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on westbound Highway 4 in Concord, California. The collision, which involved a motorcycle, a pickup truck and a sedan, happened around 3:06 p.m. east of Port Chicago Highway. The motorcyclist was ejected and died at the scene despite wearing a helmet. The crash triggered a major traffic backup that stretched east toward Pittsburg for several hours.

According to KTVU, California Highway Patrol officers who responded to the scene said the drivers of the truck and sedan were wearing seat belts and were not reported injured. KTVU reported that all westbound lanes were closed for the investigation and did not fully reopen until just after 6:30 p.m., more than three hours after the crash. The outlet noted that CHP has not yet announced what caused the collision. The motorcyclist’s identity had not been released as of the latest reporting.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 21658 requires drivers to stay within a single traffic lane and to change lanes only when it can be done safely. Multi-vehicle freeway crashes involving a motorcycle, a truck and a sedan — like Monday’s collision on Highway 4 — often trace back to a driver failing to see a motorcyclist before merging or changing lanes. Investigators have not yet said whether an unsafe lane change contributed to this crash. Motorcyclists have the same right to the full use of a traffic lane as any other vehicle on the roadway.

California Vehicle Code 27803 requires every motorcycle rider to wear a helmet that meets state safety standards, and reports indicate the rider involved in Monday’s crash was wearing one. A helmet cannot prevent a collision, but it can reduce the severity of head trauma and is one factor considered when evaluating how a crash unfolded. Under California’s comparative negligence rules, a rider’s family can still pursue compensation from an at-fault driver even where partial fault is disputed.
