Two fatal crashes struck the westbound 60 Freeway in Chino within about 40 minutes of each other during Monday morning’s rush hour. The first collision, reported just before 6 a.m. near the Mountain Avenue exit, involved a motorcyclist who ended up in the freeway lanes and died at the scene. Roughly a mile away near the Central Avenue on-ramp, a semi-truck reportedly drove up an embankment and struck a Lexus; one of the drivers was taken to a hospital, where they later died. The back-to-back crashes shut down multiple lanes and triggered miles of gridlock stretching back to the 15 Freeway.
According to KTLA, California Highway Patrol officers closed three westbound lanes near Mountain Avenue to investigate the motorcycle crash while also shutting both lanes of the Central Avenue on-ramp after the truck collision. Hoodline reported that all westbound lanes were not fully reopened until approximately 11:08 a.m., more than five hours after the first crash was called in. Caltrans District 8 assisted with traffic control as backups lingered into the late-morning commute. Investigators have not yet released the official cause of either crash or the identities of those killed.

Fatal crash closes westbound 60 Freeway through Chino
California Vehicle Code 21703 requires drivers to leave enough distance to stop safely behind the vehicle ahead, a rule that applies with even greater force to loaded semi-trucks given their weight and longer stopping distances. When a big rig cannot stop in time and drives up an embankment into another vehicle, as reportedly happened near Central Avenue, investigators typically examine whether the truck was following too closely for conditions. A violation of this statute can support a negligence claim in a wrongful death or injury lawsuit against the trucking company or driver.
The basic speed law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is safe for the traffic, weather and roadway conditions present at the time, regardless of the posted limit. This standard applies equally to a motorcyclist merging through dense freeway traffic and to a commercial truck navigating morning rush-hour congestion. Investigators rely on this statute to evaluate whether excessive speed for conditions contributed to either of Monday’s fatal collisions.
