A driver died and others were injured Thursday evening after a suspected DUI crash at the intersection of Road 152 and Avenue 192 outside Porterville, in Tulare County. California Highway Patrol officers say a white Jeep ran a stop sign and struck a pickup truck, which was then pushed into a sedan. The pickup’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the occupants of the sedan were injured. The Jeep’s driver, a man in his 50s, fled on foot into nearby orchards before being taken into custody.
According to ABC30 Fresno, investigators believe the Jeep driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. The outlet reports he now faces charges of felony DUI and hit-and-run after allegedly abandoning the scene and running from responding officers. CHP has not released further details on the identities of those killed or injured. The investigation into the crash remains active.

Man arrested after deadly suspected DUI crash in Tulare County, CHP says
California Vehicle Code 23153 makes it a crime to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or with an unlawful blood alcohol level, and by that violation cause bodily injury to another person. Because the crash allegedly caused injuries and a death, prosecutors can charge the driver with a felony under this statute rather than a standard misdemeanor DUI. A conviction can carry state prison time, particularly when the collision results in a fatality.
California Vehicle Code 20001 requires any driver involved in a collision that causes injury or death to immediately stop at the scene, identify themselves, and render reasonable assistance.
