Two 17-year-old Liberty High School students from Discovery Bay were killed just after midnight on Sunday, September 13, 2026, when the car they were riding in collided with another vehicle near the intersection of Deer Valley Road and Balfour Road, close to the Antioch-Brentwood boundary in Contra Costa County. A third occupant of their silver Infiniti, also a Liberty High student, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, while the driver of the other car, a white BMW, suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. Three of the four people involved were current Liberty High School students and athletes. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
According to KTVU FOX 2, Antioch police officers arrived within minutes of the crash and found both vehicles off the roadway near Deer Valley and Balfour roads. Liberty High School Principal Efa Huckaby said counseling would be made available to students and staff, calling the loss devastating for the school community. CBS News Bay Area reported that the Antioch Police Department’s Traffic Unit is asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area, to come forward. Authorities have not said whether either driver will face charges.
