A Maywood man has been sentenced to four years and eight months in prison after pleading no contest in connection with a DUI crash that killed a Downey grandmother and injured her granddaughter as they slept. Investigators say the crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on August 16, 2025, when a vehicle slammed into a home in the 9500 block of Gallatin Road, just west of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway. Agia Guirguis, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 24-year-old granddaughter was taken to a hospital for treatment. The driver, identified as Ryan Mota, 25, of Maywood, allegedly had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher at the time of the crash.
According to MyNewsLA.com, Mota pleaded no contest Thursday to one count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol with a BAC of 0.08% or above. The outlet reported that Mota was arrested within an hour of the crash but was later released on his own recognizance with conditions that included wearing an alcohol-monitoring device and attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings twice a week, before being taken back into custody on the day of sentencing. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office had charged Mota with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury, and driving with a BAC of 0.08% or more causing injury, citing aggravating factors including an alleged BAC of 0.15% or higher and his alleged refusal to submit to chemical testing. No road closures were reported since the crash occurred inside a private residence rather than on a public roadway.
