A 72-year-old man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a driver at the intersection of McFadden Avenue and Fairview Street in Santa Ana on Friday evening, September 4, 2026. Santa Ana police officers working near the intersection witnessed the collision, which happened just before 7 p.m. as the man rode west on McFadden Avenue and was rear-ended by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been publicly released.

According to KTLA, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and police said there were no signs of impairment; no arrest or citation had been reported as of the outlet’s report. What the Law Says

California’s Three Feet for Safety Act, Vehicle Code 21760, requires drivers overtaking a bicyclist traveling in the same direction to leave at least three feet of clearance, or to slow and pass only when it can be done safely. The law exists because cyclists sharing the road with vehicles are especially vulnerable to being struck from behind, which is allegedly what happened to the 72-year-old man on McFadden Avenue. A driver who violates this distance requirement and causes a collision can be held civilly liable for the resulting injuries or death.

Vehicle Code 21703 prohibits a driver from following another vehicle, or a person lawfully using the roadway, more closely than is reasonable given the speed and traffic conditions at the time. Rear-end collisions like this one are often evidence that a driver failed to maintain a safe following distance or was not paying adequate attention to the road ahead. Violating this statute can support a finding of negligence in a wrongful death claim brought by the victim’s family.
