A woman was killed early Thursday morning after her motorcycle struck the rear of an 18-wheeler on the westbound Katy Freeway near Mason Road in Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The crash happened just after midnight on September 3, 2026, and the woman was thrown from her motorcycle on impact. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. The westbound freeway lanes were shut down for roughly two hours before crews cleared the scene ahead of the morning commute.

ABC13 Houston reported that deputies said the woman was wearing protective gear at the time of the crash, but it did not prevent her death, and that she did not show signs of intoxication. Click2Houston, KPRC 2’s news site, also covered the crash and reported that investigators, including Deputy Chagoya of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, suspect the woman failed to control her speed as she approached the truck. No charges have been announced, and the case remains under investigation by HCSO.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.351 requires drivers to control their speed so they can stop safely within the distance they can see and to avoid colliding with a vehicle ahead. Investigators in this crash have said the motorcyclist appeared to have failed to control her speed before striking the rear of the 18-wheeler. Violating this speed-control duty can support a finding of negligence in a Texas crash claim, even absent excessive posted-limit speeding.

Texas Transportation Code Section 661.003 requires motorcycle operators and passengers to wear protective headgear meeting state safety standards, with limited exceptions for riders 21 or older who complete a safety course or carry qualifying medical coverage. Reports indicate the woman in this crash was wearing protective gear. Compliance with this statute is often examined in motorcycle injury and wrongful death cases to evaluate comparative fault and damages.
