A 22-year-old San Francisco man died after the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a light pole near El Camino Real and the westbound Interstate 380 off-ramp in San Bruno early Sunday, August 30, 2026. The 29-year-old driver, also from San Francisco, suffered major injuries in the single-vehicle crash, which happened around 12:51 a.m. Two days later, on Tuesday, San Bruno police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked him into the Maguire Correctional Facility. He faces charges including gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing great bodily injury or death, and possession of a controlled substance. Police have not released the identities of the driver or the passenger who died.

According to NBC Bay Area, the San Bruno Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the crash and continues to investigate how the vehicle left the roadway and struck the pole. The outlet reported that both men were taken to a local trauma center, where the passenger later died from his injuries. NBC Bay Area also reported that alcohol and drugs are believed to be factors, which is why the driver now faces multiple DUI-related charges. Anyone injured by a suspected impaired driver, or the family of someone killed in a similar crash, may have the right to pursue a separate civil claim.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 23153 makes it a crime to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, in doing so, injure another person. It covers impairment from alcohol, drugs, or both, which matches the controlled-substance allegation reported in this case. A criminal conviction under this statute is not required for an injured victim or their family to pursue a separate civil claim for damages.

Penal Code 191.5 defines gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, the felony reportedly filed against the driver in this case. It applies when a person dies as a result of an intoxicated driver’s grossly negligent conduct behind the wheel. A conviction can carry substantial prison time and often strengthens the evidentiary record available to a related wrongful death claim.
