A 60-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026, after a tire broke loose from another vehicle, crossed the center divider of the southbound 405 Freeway near Burbank Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, and flew into traffic. Dashcam video from a nearby Tesla shows the tire bouncing into the carpool lane moments before the rider, since identified by loved ones as Gary Minor, fell from his motorcycle and was struck by a white Toyota SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It remains unclear whether the tire itself struck Minor or his bike, or whether he crashed trying to avoid it.
According to KTLA, the California Highway Patrol says it was unaware a tire was involved until the dashcam footage surfaced days later, and the tire has still not been recovered. “We weren’t aware of the tire until the video surfaced. It adds a whole new dimension to the investigation,” CHP spokesperson Cody Sturges told the outlet. CBS News Los Angeles reported that multiple southbound lanes were shut down for hours after the crash while investigators worked the scene. CHP is asking anyone with dashcam or witness video of the vehicle that lost the tire to come forward.
