A motorcyclist was killed in Elk Grove on Tuesday evening after a collision with an SUV at the intersection of Lewis Stein Road and West Stockton Boulevard. The 33-year-old rider was reportedly in a dedicated turn lane on Lewis Stein Road when he continued straight into the path of a northbound Honda CR-V that was also turning, according to authorities. The impact left the motorcycle pinned underneath the SUV’s right front tire, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. Crashes like this one, where turning movements at a shared intersection go wrong in an instant, often turn on details of sightlines, timing, and right-of-way that only a careful investigation can sort out.

According to FOX40, Elk Grove police say the motorcycle was traveling southbound in the dedicated right-turn lane on Lewis Stein Road while the SUV sat in the dedicated left-turn lane facing northbound, both preparing to head west onto Dracut Drive. FOX40 reported that the motorcyclist continued straight instead of turning and collided with the SUV as it moved through the intersection. The outlet noted that Lewis Stein Road was closed between Big Horn Boulevard and Sheldon Road, and West Stockton Boulevard was closed between Atkins Court and Michener Way, for several hours while officers investigated. The victim’s identity had not been released as of FOX40’s report, pending notification of next of kin and confirmation by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

What the Law Says

California law requires drivers approaching an intersection to position their vehicle in the proper lane for the turn they intend to make and to complete that turn as marked. A vehicle sitting in a dedicated turn lane is expected to turn, not continue straight through the intersection, because other drivers rely on those lane markings to judge when it is safe to proceed. When that expectation is broken, as authorities say happened here, it can put crossing or oncoming traffic directly in the vehicle’s path.

Under California’s laned-roadway rule, a driver must stay within a marked lane and may only move out of it when it can be done safely. Dedicated turn lanes, like the ones both vehicles were reportedly in before this collision, exist precisely so drivers approaching from different directions can judge each other’s intended path. Straying from that lane into oncoming or crossing traffic is a common factor in intersection collisions like this one.
