A motorcyclist was killed late Friday night in a multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 680 near the McKee Road off-ramp in San Jose, California. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 10:58 p.m. on August 28, 2026, after a motorcycle collided with a sedan and at least one other vehicle. The impact forced the closure of all northbound lanes of I-680 for nearly three hours while crews investigated and cleared the roadway. As of the latest reports, authorities had not released the identity of the motorcyclist who died.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the local riding group Bay Area Midnight Riders said two of its members were killed that night, including a rider on a purple Honda motorcycle in a reportedly separate crash; CHP had not confirmed those additional details as of the report. The outlet noted the group announced it was suspending its public midnight meetups following the crashes. A CHP incident log reviewed separately confirms a coroner was called to the McKee Road off-ramp scene and that a SigAlert closed all northbound I-680 lanes from 11:19 p.m. until about 2:18 a.m. The cause of the McKee Road off-ramp collision remains under investigation.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code Section 21658 requires drivers to stay within a single lane as nearly as practicable and to move from that lane only when it is safe to do so. On a busy freeway like I-680, an unsafe lane change or improper merge is a common contributing factor in multi-vehicle collisions involving motorcyclists, who have far less protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. A violation of this statute can support a finding of negligence against a driver who cuts off, sideswipes, or fails to safely merge around another vehicle.

California Vehicle Code Section 21200 gives motorcyclists the same rights and subjects them to the same duties as drivers of any other vehicle on public roads. This means a motorcyclist involved in a multi-vehicle crash is entitled to the full protections of California traffic law, and other drivers owe motorcyclists the same duty of care they owe any other motorist. This statute is often central to determining fault when a motorcycle is struck or forced off its lane by a car, SUV, or other vehicle in a chain-reaction collision.
