A Sacramento County jury has convicted Richard Newman, 33, of second-degree murder in a fatal collision that happened around 11:50 p.m. on August 21, 2025, at 9th Street and T Street in downtown Sacramento. Prosecutors say Newman allegedly ran a red light at about 55 mph and struck a vehicle that was going through a green light. The other driver, a 50-year-old man, suffered a serious brain injury and died on September 11, 2025.
The Sacramento Bee reported the verdict this week. According to coverage of the trial, investigators determined Newman’s blood alcohol content was 0.21 percent, and he had a prior DUI conviction. FOX40 earlier reported that Newman was arrested for DUI causing great bodily injury and that the other driver later died from his injuries. Sentencing is reported to be set for November 20, 2026.
