A woman died and a man was severely injured early Saturday, September 5, 2026, after a single-vehicle crash in Spokane Valley, Washington. The vehicle left the roadway near North Sullivan Road and East Broadway Avenue around 2:50 a.m. and caught fire, according to authorities. Spokane Valley Fire and EMS extricated the driver from the burning car and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to NonStop Local KHQ, deputies arrived to find an Acura extensively damaged and engulfed in flames in a grass area on the east side of Sullivan Road, just north of Broadway Avenue. KHQ reported that the adult male passenger was unable to provide a statement due to the severity of his injuries. The Spokane Valley Traffic Unit continues to investigate what caused the vehicle to leave the road, and the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the driver’s identity. Authorities have not said whether speed, alcohol, or road conditions played a role in the early-morning crash.

What the Law Says

Washington’s reckless driving statute, RCW 46.61.500, makes it illegal to operate a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. A driver who leaves the roadway and crashes can face both criminal charges and civil liability if reckless or negligent driving caused the collision. Investigators will need to determine what caused the vehicle to leave Sullivan Road before fault can be assigned.

Under Washington’s comparative fault law, RCW 4.22.005, an injured person can still recover damages even if they were partly at fault for an accident, with their compensation reduced by their percentage of fault. This is especially relevant for passengers like the man injured in this crash, whose recovery does not depend on proving the driver was entirely at fault. The law allows courts to apportion responsibility fairly among all parties involved.
