A high-speed crash at the intersection of Snipes Pump and Green Valley roads near Mabton, Washington, killed three children and caused their pregnant mother to lose her unborn baby on the night of July 19, 2026. According to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, a Volkswagen Jetta traveling westbound at an estimated 125 mph struck a Subaru Legacy driven by Germán González-Verduzco, 31, of Royal City, as he turned onto Green Valley Road. The three children, ages 11, 10 and 2, were ejected from the Subaru and pronounced dead at the scene, while González-Verduzco and his wife were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Prosecutors initially charged González-Verduzco with vehicular homicide but dropped the case after toxicology results showed he had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.

The Yakima Herald reported that Braden Mount, 20, of Sunnyside, the driver of the Jetta, is now facing up to four counts of vehicular homicide after event data recorder and dash-camera footage allegedly documented his vehicle traveling at 125 mph immediately before the collision. The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office submitted its investigation to the Yakima County Prosecutor’s Office, and charges against Mount had not been formally filed as of the report. The crash remains under investigation, and no additional road closure information has been released.

What the Law Says

Washington’s vehicular homicide statute, RCW 46.61.520, makes it a felony to cause a death while driving under the influence, with disregard for the safety of others, or in a reckless manner. Prosecutors can pursue these charges even when, as here, the driver is later cleared of intoxication, because reckless speed alone can support the charge. A driver found to have caused a fatal crash by reckless driving, like traveling well over 100 mph on a rural road, can face years in prison under this law.

Washington’s wrongful death statute, RCW 4.20.010, allows the personal representative of a deceased victim’s estate to bring a civil claim against the at-fault driver for losses such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, and loss of companionship. Family members of children killed in a crash caused by another driver’s reckless conduct may pursue compensation under this statute separately from any criminal case. A civil wrongful death claim does not require a criminal conviction to move forward.
