Six people were hospitalized after a wrong-way driver allegedly crashed into six vehicles following a brief chase with deputies in northwest Harris County, Texas. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called out after reports of a driver traveling the wrong direction near Mueschke Road and FM-2920 late Thursday night. When deputies located the vehicle, the driver allegedly fled, leading to a short pursuit before losing control and slamming into the string of vehicles. All six victims, along with the suspected driver, were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to ABC13 Houston, the crash happened near the intersection of Mueschke Road and FM-2920, and investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the suspect’s driving. Click2Houston (KPRC) reported that Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a short pursuit ensued after deputies spotted the wrong-way vehicle, which then crashed and struck approximately six other vehicles. FM-2920 was shut down in the area while investigators processed the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. Charges against the driver, including suspicion of intoxication, remain pending as the investigation continues.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.051 requires drivers to operate their vehicle on the right half of the roadway, the rule a wrong-way driver like the one in this crash allegedly violated. Driving against the flow of traffic is inherently dangerous because oncoming drivers have little time to react, and violations of this statute are frequently used as evidence of negligence in a personal injury claim. When a wrong-way driver causes a multi-vehicle crash, injured victims may be entitled to compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Texas Penal Code Section 49.04 makes it a crime to operate a motor vehicle in a public place while intoxicated, and investigators in this case say they believe alcohol may have been a factor. Beyond criminal penalties, a driver’s intoxication can support a claim for exemplary (punitive) damages in a civil injury lawsuit under Texas law. Victims of an allegedly impaired driver should preserve evidence, including police reports and blood alcohol results, early in the case.
