A 16-year-old from Hale Center died after a highway crash on Interstate 27 in Hale County, Texas. The teen was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when it struck the rear of a trailer being towed by a 2023 Dodge Ram, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was rushed to Covenant Health Hospital-Plainview, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Dodge Ram was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
According to KCBD, the crash happened around 2:09 p.m. Wednesday in the northbound lanes of I-27 near mile marker 44, south of Plainview, as both pickups traveled in the left lane. KCBD reported that the teen was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate exactly how the Silverado collided with the towed trailer. Hale Center ISD canceled its junior varsity football game the following night out of respect for the victim’s family and community.
