A 66-year-old truck driver from Sealy and a 16-year-old girl from East Bernard were killed after their vehicles collided head-on on U.S. Highway 90 near FM 1952 in Fort Bend County, Texas, on the morning of Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Texas Department of Public Safety officials say a 2025 Honda sedan traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a 2007 Freightliner truck head-on. The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner’s Office, while the teen driver of the Honda later died from her injuries at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. A 10-year-old boy riding in the Honda was also hospitalized. Investigators have not said why the Honda crossed into oncoming traffic.

According to ABC13 Houston, DPS said preliminary information indicates the Freightliner was traveling eastbound on U.S. 90 when the westbound Honda entered its lane, causing the head-on collision, and that the reason the Honda crossed the center line remained under investigation. Crossroads Today later reported that the 16-year-old Honda driver died of her injuries at Memorial Hermann Hospital and that DPS said investigators had not determined why she veered into the truck’s path. Neither outlet reported specific road closures at the scene. Texas DPS said the crash remains under active investigation, and authorities had not released the names of those killed as of the latest reporting.

What the Law Says

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.051 requires drivers to operate on the right half of the roadway, crossing the center line only to pass, turn, or where signage allows otherwise. Head-on crashes like this one on U.S. 90 typically stem from a driver crossing into oncoming lanes, whether from distraction, fatigue, a medical event, or impairment. When a violation of this rule causes injury or death, the responsible driver can face civil liability for the harm caused, separate from any citations Texas DPS may issue.

Under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Section 71.004, the surviving spouse, children, and parents of someone killed in a crash like this one may bring a wrongful death claim against the driver found at fault. Such claims generally must be filed within two years of the date of death. A wrongful death action can seek compensation for the financial support, companionship, and care the family has lost.
