A high-speed pursuit involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers ended in a crash on Houston’s northwest side early Saturday, August 29, 2026, injuring an innocent motorist. Authorities say a driver with a final removal order refused to stop for ICE agents and, after striking two ICE vehicles during a second stop attempt, collided with a civilian’s car near Fallbrook Drive and Veterans Memorial Drive, causing it to overturn. The driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries. The suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, and as of this writing remains at large.

According to Click2Houston (KPRC 2), the driver was a Nicaraguan national living in the U.S. unlawfully who was the target of an ICE vehicle stop when he fled, striking two ICE government vehicles before crashing into the innocent motorist’s car. FOX 26 Houston reported that Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, including K-9 units, searched the wooded area but lost the suspect’s scent trail, and that the office has filed charges against him including failure to stop and render aid. An ICE officer also suffered a minor injury to the arm while allegedly attempting to break the suspect’s driver-side window at an earlier point in the pursuit.

What the Law Says

Under Texas Penal Code Section 38.04, a driver who intentionally flees from a police officer attempting a lawful detention or arrest commits the offense of evading arrest or detention. When the suspect uses a vehicle and the flight causes bodily injury to another person, as authorities allege happened in this crash, the offense can escalate to a felony. This statute forms the basis for the criminal charges investigators are pursuing against the fleeing driver in this case.

Texas Transportation Code Section 550.021 requires a driver involved in a crash that causes injury to immediately stop and render reasonable aid to anyone hurt. Authorities say the fleeing driver in this case left the scene without stopping, exposing him to a separate charge of failure to stop and render aid on top of any evading-arrest charge. This statute exists precisely to protect innocent motorists like the one struck in this crash, who depend on the other driver remaining at the scene.
