A 20-year-old pedestrian died after being struck by a car on a rural frontage road north of Hawley, Texas, late Thursday night. Alexis Ivan Jimenez, of Rio Grande City, was walking in the roadway along the U.S. Highway 83/277 frontage road when a 16-year-old driver traveling south in a 2013 Cadillac struck him just before 11 p.m. Jimenez was rushed to Anson General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Friday morning. The teenage driver was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
According to KTXS News, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that weather was clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash, and that troopers are still working to determine exactly how Jimenez came to be walking in the road roughly five miles north of Hawley. Jones County Justice of the Peace Cheryl Guernsey pronounced Jimenez dead at 1:20 a.m. Friday, KTXS reported. No charges have been announced as the Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate. Pedestrian deaths on unlit rural highways like this frontage road remain among the leading causes of nighttime traffic fatalities in Texas.
