Four people were taken to the hospital Thursday night, August 27, 2026, after a high-speed, multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Main and North Akard streets in downtown Dallas. Dallas police said officers responded to the scene around 8:11 p.m. and found several damaged vehicles, including a car that had struck a tree. A driver was taken into custody at the scene after allegedly trying to run from officers. The crash remains under investigation by the Dallas Police Department.

According to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth, a witness said a black Ford Mustang ran a red light while traveling in excess of 50 miles per hour and collided with an SUV heading southbound on Akard Street before spinning and striking a tree. NBC 5 reported that 24-year-old Eric Alvarez Sanchez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a valid license. CBS News Texas reported that Dallas police confirmed four people were transported to the hospital but said their conditions were not immediately known, and that no officers were injured.

What the Law Says

Texas Penal Code Section 49.04 makes it a crime to operate a motor vehicle in a public place while intoxicated. A conviction is generally a Class B misdemeanor, but penalties increase sharply when the intoxicated driving causes a crash that injures or kills someone. Victims of a DWI-related crash can also pursue a separate civil claim against the driver for their injuries, medical bills, and other losses.

Texas Transportation Code Section 545.401 prohibits driving a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property, commonly charged as reckless driving. Excessive speed combined with running a red light in a busy downtown area can support this charge and also serves as strong evidence of negligence in a personal injury lawsuit brought by anyone hurt in the crash.
