A 49-year-old motorcyclist was killed in an early-morning hit-and-run crash in the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. A department spokesperson told KTLA that officers were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and 91st Street at 3:37 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, after receiving reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.
Officers located the motorcyclist at the scene and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries, the LAPD said. Police said the suspect vehicle is described as a white sedan that fled the area in an unknown direction, and no arrest has been reported. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin. As reported by CBS News Los Angeles, a standing reward of up to $50,000 is available through the Los Angeles Administrative Code Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the driver. The LAPD reminds motorists that if they are involved in a collision they should pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves. Anyone with information is asked to contact LAPD Officer Lozada or Detective Nily at 323-421-2577.
California Vehicle Code § 20001 makes it a crime for a driver involved in a crash that injures or kills another person to leave the scene without stopping, identifying themselves, and rendering reasonable assistance. When the collision results in death, a hit-and-run can be charged as a felony, and the same conduct can also support a civil claim by the victim’s family.
California’s wrongful death statute allows a spouse, domestic partner, children, and certain other dependents to bring a claim for the losses caused by a death resulting from another person’s wrongful act or neglect. In fatal hit-and-run cases, a claim may also be available through uninsured motorist coverage when the fleeing driver is never identified.
