On Sunday, August 30, 2026, at approximately 2:25 a.m., a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on southbound State Route 67 just north of East Bradley Avenue in the Bostonia area near El Cajon, San Diego County. California Highway Patrol officers said the man was standing in the middle of the southbound lanes at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. All southbound lanes of SR-67 were shut down for several hours as investigators worked the scene, reopening around 4:41 a.m. The driver remained at the scene, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation. No names have been released.

According to ABC 10News, CHP has not disclosed why the pedestrian was in the roadway or released details about the vehicle or driver involved. The outlet reported that the victim was a man wearing shorts and no shirt, and that CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances that led him to be standing in the traffic lanes. The California Highway Patrol’s own Fatal Accident Feed corroborated the time, location and victim description of the crash. Authorities have not indicated whether alcohol, drugs, or vehicle speed played a role. If the crash resulted from a driver’s failure to keep a proper lookout or reduce speed for a pedestrian in the roadway, the driver could allegedly bear liability for the death.

What the Law Says

California Vehicle Code 21954 requires pedestrians outside a marked crosswalk to yield the right-of-way to vehicles, but it does not relieve a driver of the duty to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian on the roadway. Drivers must reduce speed or take evasive action when they see, or reasonably should see, a person in the travel lanes, even where the pedestrian is not legally entitled to the right-of-way. A driver’s failure to keep a proper lookout on a highway like SR-67 can support a finding of negligence.

Vehicle Code 21960 allows Caltrans and local authorities to prohibit pedestrians, bicycles and other non-motorized traffic on designated freeways and expressways where high-speed traffic makes walking in the roadway extremely dangerous. Segments of SR-67 function as a limited-access expressway, and postings restricting pedestrian access are common along such corridors. Whether such a restriction applied at this location will likely be examined as investigators work to determine fault.
