A 41-year-old Los Angeles truck driver was killed Friday morning when his big rig overturned on eastbound Interstate 10 in the community of Hayfield near Chiriaco Summit, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, west of Red Cloud Mine Road, prompting a Sig Alert that kept lanes affected for much of the day.
As reported by KESQ News Channel 3 and City News Service, a green Freightliner tractor hauling a trailer drove into the center median, causing the big rig to overturn and land on its left side; how fast the vehicle was traveling was unclear. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Riverside County coroner’s office later identified him as Marco Rodriguez-Lopez, 41, of Los Angeles. A Sig Alert was issued shortly after 8:40 a.m., and all lanes were back open by about 4 p.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP, and no findings about mechanical condition, driver fatigue or roadway factors have been announced.
