A woman died and a man suffered life-threatening injuries early Saturday morning after the SUV they were riding in slammed into a utility pole and caught fire in Garden Grove. The crash happened around 2:55 a.m. at the intersection of Knott Street and Acacia Avenue. Officers pulled both occupants from the burning vehicle before firefighters arrived, but the woman could not be saved. The man, who was driving, was extricated and rushed to UCI Medical Center with critical injuries. The Garden Grove Police Department is investigating what caused the SUV to leave the roadway and hit the pole.
According to MyNewsLA.com, the vehicle was a white 2007 Toyota Highlander that struck the pole at the southeast corner of the intersection before catching fire, trapping the unconscious driver and passenger inside. The outlet reported that Garden Grove police officers freed the pair from the vehicle and began life-saving efforts at the scene. Investigators with the department’s Neighborhood Traffic Unit have not released the identities of either occupant and are asking anyone who saw the SUV on Knott Street before the crash, or who has video of the collision, to contact investigators. No arrests or citations have been announced as the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Woman killed, man injured during single-vehicle crash in Garden Grove
California’s Basic Speed Law, Vehicle Code 22350, prohibits driving at a speed greater than is safe for existing conditions, regardless of the posted limit. In single-vehicle crashes like this one, where an SUV left the roadway and struck a fixed object, investigators often look at whether speed was too fast for the road’s design, lighting, or curves. A driver found to have violated the basic speed law can be held liable for resulting injuries and deaths.
Under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60, the surviving family members of someone killed in a crash may bring a wrongful death claim against the party responsible. This can include a spouse, children, or other dependents who suffered financial and emotional loss from the death. A wrongful death claim can seek compensation for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and loss of companionship, separate from any criminal investigation into the crash.
