A 47-year-old man was killed Monday night after he stepped into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Centre City Parkway in Escondido, according to police. The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes near Ninth Avenue. A bystander administered first aid before paramedics arrived, but the man was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Centre City Parkway was closed for roughly four hours while investigators worked the scene.
According to NBC 7 San Diego, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with Escondido police, who said drugs, alcohol and speed on the part of the driver do not appear to have been factors in the collision. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or the driver. The Escondido Police Department continues to investigate exactly how the pedestrian entered the roadway.

California Vehicle Code Section 21954 applies when a pedestrian enters a roadway outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk. It requires pedestrians to yield the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles, but it does not relieve drivers of their ongoing duty to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian on the roadway.
