A 48-year-old Sumas man died Friday night after his SUV left the roadway and struck a tree on State Route 547, also known as Reese Hill Road, in rural Whatcom County. Sebastian Gomez was driving a 2006 Ford Expedition northbound near milepost 8, around 11 p.m., when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road. Gomez, the only person in the vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. Washington State Patrol troopers believe he suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose control, and investigators say drugs and alcohol were not involved.
According to Cascadia Daily News, WSDOT closed Reese Hill Road in both directions for several hours overnight while troopers investigated and cleared the scene, reopening the roadway by about 3 a.m. Whatcom News reported that the Ford Expedition was totaled in the crash and that troopers ruled out impairment as a factor. The Washington State Patrol has since closed its investigation, attributing the crash to Gomez’s medical episode rather than driver error, distraction or another vehicle. No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
