A pedestrian was struck and killed by a northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train at the D Street railroad crossing in Encinitas early Sunday morning. The collision happened shortly before 5 a.m. near the intersection of D Street and North Vulcan Avenue. Encinitas Fire Department crews responded and determined the victim, a man believed to be in his 20s or 30s, was deceased at the scene. His identity had not been released as authorities worked to notify next of kin.
According to fox5sandiego.com, San Diego County sheriff’s deputies and Amtrak personnel responded to investigate the collision, and rail service was temporarily shut down near Orpheus Avenue and North Vulcan Avenue while crews worked the scene before service resumed. The outlet reported that authorities had not released additional details about what led up to the fatal collision. This marks at least the second fatal train strike at the D Street crossing in recent years, following the death of an 18-year-old at the same crossing in January 2024, even after the city secured a $33.6 million federal grant to upgrade safety infrastructure there, hoodline.com reported. The investigation into Sunday’s collision remains active.
