A woman was injured early Sunday morning when a pickup truck struck a disabled car on southbound Interstate 5 near 172nd Street NE outside Arlington, Washington. The crash was reported around 2:55 a.m. on September 20, 2026, near milepost 206 in Snohomish County. The Toyota Camry was stopped on the freeway when it was struck by a 1988 Ford F-150 pickup. The Camry’s driver was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the two people riding in the pickup were not hurt. Washington State Patrol troopers are still working to determine what caused the crash.

According to Forth News, which cited a Washington State Patrol press memo, 41-year-old Jessica M. Bush was driving the disabled Camry when it was struck and sustained injuries; she was transported to Providence for treatment. The outlet reported that Ford driver Gage C. Lacasse and passenger Jennifer Jackman were both wearing seatbelts and were not injured. Both vehicles were declared total losses and towed from the scene by Discount Towing and Recovery. WSP said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

What the Law Says

Washington’s basic speed rule requires drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent under existing conditions, taking into account actual and potential hazards, and to control their speed so they can stop within the assured clear distance ahead. This rule is central to crashes where a driver fails to see and avoid a stopped or disabled vehicle occupying a travel lane. A driver who cannot stop in time to avoid a vehicle legally on the roadway can be found at fault even without a specific speeding citation.

Washington follows a pure comparative fault system, meaning an injured person’s damages are reduced by their own percentage of fault but are not barred entirely, even if that person is found more than 50% responsible. In collisions involving a disabled or stopped vehicle, insurers often try to shift blame onto the stalled driver, making this rule especially important for anyone hurt while their vehicle was stopped on the freeway.
